Drug Uses
NuvaRing is a contraceptive device. Like oral contraceptives ("The Pill"), it prevents pregnancy by providing a steady level of the female hormones estrogen and progestin. This eliminates the hormonal surge that ordinarily triggers the release of an egg. Hormonal contraceptives such as NuvaRing are extremely reliable when used exactly as directed.
How Taken
Wash and dry your hands and remove NuvaRing from its foil pouch. Choose the position that is most comfortable for you, such as lying down, squatting, or standing with one leg up. Hold NuvaRing between your thumb and index finger and press the opposite sides of the ring together. Gently push the folded ring into your vagina. The exact position of the ring is not important for it to work. If you feel discomfort, use your finger to gently push NuvaRing further into the vagina. Most women do not feel the ring once it is in place, although some are aware of it.
Leave the ring in place for exactly 3 weeks, then remove it. Hook your index finger under the forward rim or hold the rim between your index finger and middle finger and pull the ring out. Place the used ring in the foil pouch it came in and dispose of it in the garbage, away from children and pets. Do not discard in the toilet.
Your menstrual period will usually start 2 to 3 days after the ring is removed and may not have finished before it's time to insert the next ring. For continued pregnancy protection, you need to insert the new ring exactly 1 week after the old one was removed, even if your period has not stopped.
Warnings/Precautions
While using NuvaRing, you should not rely upon a diaphragm when you need a back-up method of birth control because NuvaRing may interfere with the correct placement and position of a diaphragm.
Missed Dose
If NuvaRing slips out, you'll still be protected against pregnancy provided the ring is replaced within 3 hours. You can use the old ring (after rinsing it with cool or lukewarm water) or insert a new ring. Remove the ring according to your original schedule.
If you're unable to replace the ring within 3 hours, insert it as soon as possible and use an additional method of birth control for 7 days.
If you forget and leave the ring in place for an extra week, remove it, take a one-week break, and reinsert a new one on day 7. If you leave the ring in place for more than 4 weeks you may not be adequately protected against pregnancy.
Possible Side Effects
The estrogen component is responsible for many of the side effects that occur with all of the combined hormonal methods of birth control (ring, patch or pill). The ring has less estrogen than either the pill or the patch; therefore nausea, headaches and breast tenderness may occur less often or be less severe.
The most common side effect is an increased amount of normal vaginal discharge. Occasionally women report an increased number of vaginal infections and irritation. Clinical studies show women using the ring experience an increased amount of lactobacillus in the vagina. Lactobacillus is a normal bacteria present in the vagina that actually helps decrease the incidence of yeast infections.
Headaches may occur. These should be reported to your health care provider right away if the headache or accompanying symptoms (light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, etc.) is more severe than you have experienced before, do not respond to over-the-counter medications or last more than one month.
Mild nausea may occur with initial use, but usually will resolve within a few days. Rarely, vomiting may occur. If nausea lasts throughout the month or occurs persistently at the beginning of every ring cycle, report it to your health care provider. Vitamin B-6 (50 mg. 1-2 tablets daily) may help reduce nausea.
Occasionally spotting and mid-cycle bleeding may occur while the ring is in the vagina. The amount of bleeding is usually minimal and will normally be reduced as you continue use, but may occur from time to time for no apparent reason. This is a normal occurrence and does not indicate that it is not working as a contraceptive.
Storage
Store at room temperature, 25°C (77°F), and avoid sunlight. Discard unused rings after the expiration date marked on the label. Place the used ring in the reclosable foil pouch and properly dispose of it in a waste receptacle out of the reach of children and pets.
Overdose
If NuvaRing has been left in your vagina for an extra week or fewer (four weeks total or less), remove it and insert a new ring after a one-week ring-free break. If NuvaRing has been left in place for more than four weeks, you may not be adequately protected from pregnancy and you must check to be sure you are not pregnant. You must use an extra method of birth control, such as male condoms or spermicide, until the new NuvaRing has been in place for seven days in a row.
More Information
Rarely, NuvaRing can slip out of the vagina if it has not been inserted properly, or while removing a tampon, moving the bowels, straining, or with severe constipation. If NuvaRing slips out of the vagina, and it has been out less than three hours, you should still be protected from pregnancy. NuvaRing can be rinsed with cool to lukewarm (not hot) water and should be reinserted as soon as possible, and at the latest within three hours. If you have lost NuvaRing, you must insert a new NuvaRing and use it on the same schedule as you would have used the lost ring. If NuvaRing has been out of the vagina for more than 3 hours, you may not be adequately protected from pregnancy. NuvaRing can be rinsed with cool to lukewarm (not hot) water and reinserted as soon as possible.
